About the Job:

As a Network Security Engineer, you will work as part of a global team on the deployment, configuration, and maintenance of high-end routers and switches in a multi-vendor environment. You will work closely with internal and external organizations on new installations; capacity upgrades; development of organizational standards; and advanced troubleshooting to ensure the continued growth and stability of our global platform. The Senior Network Security Engineer is responsible for architecting and maintaining Akamai’s DDoS mitigation network infrastructure. Using complex in-house engineered hardware, software, and network equipment, the qualified individual provides solutions against Internet-based security threats, particularly large scale DDoS attacks.

About the Team:

The Network Engineering team is a highly skilled group of individuals that work on various technologies including DWDM transport, switches, routers, peering/backbone/transit circuits, DDOS mitigation, NetApp Filers, and other quasi network/software systems in support of Akamai’s mapping technologies. While the primary focus of this position will be Layer 3 routing, there is opportunity to work on other technologies.


*Install, configure, and maintain Cisco and Juniper routers using command line as well as Linux tools.
*Work on cross-functional teams in support of new deployments, influencing teams towards more supportable/sustainable designs while keeping budget concerns and HW limitations in mind.
*Participate in new product design and develop configuration templates in support of new business initiatives. Develop alerting and support models around Network Engineering aspects.
*Configure and monitor complex peering relationships via BGP (route-maps, communities, and/or filters) as well as high capacity data circuits (1G, 10G, 100G Ethernet circuits)
*Collaborate with senior team members and network architects on traffic optimization
*Work with vendors and internal organizations to build out large points of presence across the globe.
*Enforce existing standards and ensure consistent adherence to published policies.
*Collaborate with the team on templates and standards for router deployments and update documentation accordingly. Create and maintain detailed documentation on router configuration and non-standard setups.
*Escalate affectively internally and externally to resolve provider connectivity issues, working closely with our operations teams.
*Provide training and support to junior engineers and internal organizations.
*Screen/interview new candidates, mentor junior team members.
*Participate in an on-call rotation.
*Travel occasionally, as required.
*Continued updating of job knowledge by reading professional publications, participating in educational opportunities, while maintaining personal networks, organizational participation and attending conferences.
*Read vendor release notes and select OS. Work with vendors on HW/SW bugs.
*Support acquisition and integration efforts.


Basic Qualifications:

*Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering or related field

*Minimum 10 years configuring BGP & OSPF in a large service provider organization including experience configuring route-maps, communities, extensive ACLs, and virtual routing instances
*Minimum 10 years configuring service provider grade routers and switches (Cisco and Juniper).
*Minimum 7 years in IP network design and ethernet technologies, including security and DDoS mitigation.
*Minimum 5 years in Linux/Unix and related tools.

Desired Qualifications:

*Familiarity with protocol analyzers and circuit debugging/test equipment.
*Experience with Juniper or other router vendors.
*Understanding of end-to-end data flows and traffic patterns.
*Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
*Strong troubleshooting skills and the ability to perform advanced performance and capacity tuning administration tasks.
*Must be an organized self-starter, able to deliver assigned tasks on time, and manage multiple tasks with minimal supervision in a fast paced environment.
*Experience with TACACS/AAA management.
*Experience with network automation and tools design/development.
*Ability to prioritize information and manage projects across teams.
*SQL & shell scripting.
