Senior Director of Procurement & Campus Business Services


Berklee College of Music, Boston, MA, seeks a proven, results oriented leader for the position of Senior Director of Procurement & Campus Business Services. Retained, on an exclusive basis, to conduct this search is P.N. French Associates, Inc. (Contact information is included at the end of this document.)


Reporting directly to the Senior Vice President, Administration and Finance and Chief Financial Officer, the Senior Director will manage not only procurement - but in addition will have control over all campus business services... including Property and Real Estate Management, Dining Services, Campus Book Store, Mail and Document Services, Campus One Card Program and P-Card Program, Vending Services, Shipping and Receiving, and Campus Office Equipment Management, and other functions as directed by the SVP/CFO.  




  • In collaboration with key Berklee financial staff and administrators, the Senior Director is responsible for establishing/contributing to/and continually improving an efficient and cost-effective program designed to assist all members of the College community in the procurement of goods and services. The Senior Director is fully accountable for the oversight and management of contracts in compliance with College budget and policies.
  •  Managing a staff of procurement professionals, the Senior Director negotiates and manages sensitive/complex contracts which have a significant impact on College-wide business operations. Manages, tracks, and evaluates contract compliance. Ensures vendor performance and tracks/reports savings generated by sourcing efforts. Oversees the Berklee RFP process and evaluates vendors.
  •  Works in collaboration with key team members to support - and provide analysis of - all business services and operations which have significant operational analysis across the College including Campus Book Store, Dining Services, Mail and Document Services, Public Safety, Facilities, etc.
  • Responsible for the overall management and oversight of Berklee's Campus Procurement Card Program, including the College procurement modules and related systems.
  • Develops new supply sources where existing suppliers or contractors are inadequate. Utilizes strategic sourcing processes/methods to select suppliers based on the best combination of cost, delivery, quality, and reliability... as well as the receptivity of the supplier to submit to strict measurement and control.
  • Develops and implements short-term and long-term operational efficiencies and procurement strategies designed to reduce costs and improve both quality and service... and, at the same time, meets college-wide goals and objectives. Works with College administration - including senior management, faculty and staff - to ensure these measures are achieved.
  • Works with the Controller (and Accounts Payable) to manage the procure-to-pay process. Identifies operational efficiencies and current available technology to streamline the process and create efficiencies.
  • Oversees the Property and Real Estate Management function, including property leases; lease portfolio includes over twenty commercial tenants, a residential apartment building, and spaces Berklee leases from multiple owners. Works closely with the V.P. Real Estate and Berklee attorneys to negotiate new lease agreements and facilitate current and future building projects. Works with the City of Boston as needed regarding property taxes.
  • Serves as liaison to outside procurement groups and consortia; identifies areas for collaboration, cost savings, and efficiency increases.
  • Oversees The Boston Consortium's e-marketplace initiative on behalf of the College. Collaborates with peers at other institutions and existing software solutions providers to develop a strong base of contracts, ensuring an efficient electronic marketplace.
  • Oversees - with especially high focus - special projects assigned by the Senior Vice President, Administration and Finance and Chief Financial Officer. Ensures projects are well-managed, and ensures not only that timelines are adhered to - but, in addition, ensures deliverables are achieved.
  • Works with the Controller and Accounts Payable to ensure best payment practices are implemented, monitored and refined as necessary.

Required Skills

  • Ability to direct managers within functional area. Ability to undertake the following employment actions: hiring; termination (in collaboration with Human Resources); corrective action; and, performance reviews.
  • Ability to communicate broad-based, complex information/policies/procedures across Berklee - at all levels of the College. Ability to present business and operational challenges - and proposed solutions - to diverse audiences including senior administration. Ability to develop and mentor staff. Strong ability to negotiate, motivate, and persuade others.
  • Ability to represent Berklee by working collaboratively with peers - and senior leadership - within The Boston Consortium and other national purchasing consortia in the deployment of local and national consortia contracts. 
  • Strong decision making abilities. The decisions of the Senior Director will have significant and broad implications within Finance & Administration and across the College... impacting the overall strategy and direction of Berklee.
  • Problem solving abilities... problems can be complex and abstract. Ability to develop solutions using substantial creativity, resourcefulness, negotiation, and diplomacy.
  • Ability to set direction and vision (for the College's procurement activities) including the establishment of priorities, the development of policies/procedures, and the appropriate allocation of resources.
  • Ability to discharge fiscal responsibilities; the Senior Director will have full responsibility for planning, monitoring and managing transactions for multiple departments... College-wide.
  • Ability to develop and present clear and concise presentations for internal/external audiences, explaining complex business challenges and appropriate solutions.
  • Macintosh fluency.

Required Experience

  • Bachelor's degree (general business, management, finance, or accounting) and optimally an MBA or other advanced degree.
  • At least 8 years of related business experience, including 5-8 years supervisory and management experience. Experience working in higher education will be a definite plus.
  • Broad and comprehensive knowledge of business theories, concepts and practices and the ability to apply this knowledge to complex/difficult/unprecedented situations.
  • Demonstrated understanding of procurement technologies. This includes ERP procurement systems, and current eProcurement, eSourcing, and ePayables technologies.
  • Macintosh fluency.
  • Workday experience would be a plus.
