About Us

Denver Parks & Recreation is seeking Lifeguards to staff our brand new Carla Madison Recreation Center located at 2405 E Colfax Ave, Denver, CO 80206 (Josephine St. and Colfax Ave.)
This state-of-the-art, 70,000 square-foot LEED Gold certified facility will be located on the corner of Josephine St. and Colfax Ave in the heart of Denver, Colorado. The center will include an eight-lane lap pool, leisure pool, gymnasium, fitness areas, community gathering spaces, classrooms, dog park, kid watch center and other outdoor amenities. Carla Madison Recreation Center is expected to be an exciting and awe-inspiring addition to Denver's reputable network of recreation centers.

About Our Job

Lifeguards perform public safety and recreational work supervising, swimming and enforcing regulations at municipal pools.

Lifeguards love their jobs because they have the opportunity to:

Job Responsibilities:
  • Observes and patrols pool and enforces safety regulations.
  • Assists swimmers from water when in danger.
  • Performs resuscitation and first aid when appropriate.
  • Some positions may coach swimming teams.
  • Some positions may perform minor maintenance work on pool equipment.
  • Some positions provide counter work as assigned.
  • May perform other related duties as assigned or requested.
Lifeguards with Water Safety Instructor Certification have the opportunity to earn swim instruction pay differential, by conducting group and/or private swim lessons.
  • Group Swim Lessons: Employees will receive their current hourly rate of pay, plus fifty percent (50%) of the employee's current hourly rate of pay for time conducting swim lessons.
  • Private Swim Lessons: Employees will receive their current hourly rate of pay, plus seventy-five percent (75%) of the employee's current hourly rate of pay for time spent teaching a private swim lesson.
*On Call = This is an on-call position which will work no more than 39 hours per week and is not eligible for benefits. On-call positions may have routine or variable work schedules.

About You

Required Qualifications:
  • Must be at least 15 years of age
  • Within the first month of employment: Possession of a current Lifeguard Training Certification from one of the following agencies: American Red Cross, Ellis & Associates, NASCO, or Star Guard

Our ideal candidate will be reliable, attentive, flexible and dedicated to promoting safe and fun enjoyment of Denver's municipal pools. Additionally, our ideal candidate will possess:
  • Previous Lifeguarding experience
  • Water Safety Instructor Certification

These positions do require applicants to test on-site which will include in-pool performance testing such as CPR, Swimming and Rescue (active, passive and spinal).
  • If you enroll in our classes, the performance test in included.
  • If you already have your certification, we may require you to complete the City & County of Denver's performance test.

Classification Title: We call this job a Lifeguard/Swim Instructor. The official job classification title is Lifeguard [RG2401]
Hiring Rate: $9.50 hourly
Assessments / Testing: This position requires an on-site/in-pool performance test.

Candidates must pass a criminal background check and other verifications required for the position which may include, but are not limited to, employment and/or education verification, motor vehicle record check, drug test, and/or physical.
