Job Description


Oversee and direct all activities relating to student mental health counseling services for the college. 
Integrate culturally appropriate and inclusive practices in all aspects of counseling services.
Provide administrative and clinical leadership to a diverse staff of mental health professionals.
Serve as strategic partner within the Health & Wellness Department.
Develop clinical peer supervision model or other formats as needed.
Assure compliance with all legal mandates and ethical codes that govern mental health counseling. 
Responsible for the daily management of counseling activities including short-term counseling services, referral processes, crisis intervention, community psychoeducational initiatives. 
The Director will be responsible for overseeing a review of the existing graduate/doctoral internship program and make recommendations for its future. Develop, implement and oversee policy/procedures related to mental health counseling services in conjunction with risk management.



  • Provide administrative supervision and leadership to a team of licensed mental health professionals and all personnel activities related to the counseling team including: hiring, onboarding, supervision, and evaluation of staff. Provide professional development to supervisees and engage Human Resource partners when necessary.
  • In conjunction with the Associate Dean, Health and Wellness, develop short- and long-term goals and objectives related to mental health counseling services, and ensure that these goals are met.
  • Oversee mental health services, which includes developing and implementing a protocol for screening and assessment, triage, crisis-consultations/intervention, initial assessments, short-term counseling and referrals.
  • Collaborate with Valencia medical team to provide for coordination of care for students abroad.
  • Develop a robust menu of counseling services (e.g. groups, psychoeducational classes) that are relevant to musicians and performing artists, international students and marginalized students.
  • Articulate, clarify, and communicate rationale for short-term counseling model to include session limits.
  • Approximately 30-40% of the Director’s time will include direct clinical service to a case load of students
  • Respond to psychiatric emergencies and facilitate psychiatric hospitalizations as needed. Assist clinical staff in evaluating and managing high-risk cases.
  • Oversee contract and daily coordination with after-hours on-call counselor.
  • In consultation with the Vice President of Student Affairs, Associate Dean Health & Wellness, Campus Business Services and college legal counsel oversee and implement all policies and procedures related to mental health counseling services including: risk assessment, emergency protocols, informed consent, limits of confidentiality.  Assure compliance with ethical standards.
  • Oversee annual operating budget. Reconcile all budgetary transactions. Forecast needs as part of annual budget cycle based on strategic priorities of Health & Wellness.
  • Serve as member of CARES Team, which coordinates college-wide response and support plans for concerning/at risk students.
  • Assist in readmittance process and provide clinical expertise the Associate Dean, Health & Wellness regarding students’ readiness to return to the college following psychiatric hospitalization or psychological medical withdrawal.
  • Oversee all printed and web content regarding the mental health and counseling services
  • Serve as system administrator for electronic medical record, schedule system and related processes; lead the preparation of monthly and annual report that highlights significant changes in demographics, volumes, needs, and trends to inform strategic priorities.
  • Implement student learning assessment outcomes for students who utilize counseling services.  
  • Educate faculty and staff on mental health services through a comprehensive outreach strategy and printed materials in order to encourage appropriate and smooth referrals.
  • Participate in or lead orientation sessions in collaboration with New Students and Family Programs. Provide training to faculty, staff, RAs and other student groups.
  • Direct, or serve on, campus-wide or divisional committees.
  • Direct the storage and disposal of all mental health records in compliance with legal requirements.
  • Collaborate on high-risk situations with the Associate Dean, Health & Wellness, the Senior Director of Public Safety Services, Chief of Police (or designee), Housing and Residential Life staff; and the after-hours On Call counselor.
  • Respond to crises that affect the community through specialized programming, memorial services, formulation of support groups or other outreach efforts.
  • Collaborate on grant funding proposals related to the center’s activities

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: The Director will provide direct oversight and leadership to 6 full time counselors.

Required Experience

MINIMUM JOB QUALIFICATIONS: Requires a Masters in Social Work or Counseling or a PhD/PsyD in Psychology. 10+ years of experience in counseling.

  • Extensive experience in a college or university setting is strongly preferred.
  • Supervisory experience preferred.
  • Must be have a current active license in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts or license eligible. 
  • Ability to apply for an authorization of temporary involuntary hospitalization (“Section 12”) in Massachusetts strongly preferred.
  • Fluent in English and bilingual in Spanish, Chinese, Korean preferred.
  • Demonstrated evidence of culturally inclusive practices, protocols, programs and services

Special Working Conditions. Physical Requirements; Responsible for on call 24 HR coverage, etc.
